Mrs. Katheryn Welch
kwelch@releeacademy.org Katheryn Welch is the third of four children born to Robert S. and June Latimer. Her father was owner and publisher of the Lee County Messenger. Her mother was a math teacher in Hartsville and later helped her father at the newspaper office. Her parents, both college graduates, instilled in her at an early age that they held high expectations for her brothers, her sister, and herself. They stressed the importance of each of them completing a college degree and their influence led Katheryn to a profession in education. She attended the class of 1967 at Bishopville High School. She received her degree in Elementary Education from Coker College in 1971. She married her high school sweetheart, Benny (Hank) Welch, who also grew up in Lee County. She and Hank are blessed with two sons who were very active in sports at Robert E. Lee Academy. They have 2 wonderful daughters-in-law and three grandchildren. Their oldest granddaughter is in K3 and also attends daycare at Robert E. Lee. After receiving her degree from Coker, she began teaching first grade at Bishopville Primary School, which is the school she attended from second grade through fourth grade as a child. She never wanted to teach any other grade. She has always enjoyed seeing the growth first graders make from August to May in their maturity level and academic development. She taught for 30 years at Bishopville Primary, spending the last 27 years in the same room. Before making the decision to retire after 30 years at Bishopville Primary School, she made sure that there was an opening at REL in first grade. There was, and here she is now in her fourth year at the greatest school in the nation! Mrs. Welch is teaching first grade with one of her first grade students, Donna Gooding. She has also taught grandchildren of her teachers and grandchildren of her classmates at Bishopville High. She attended many events at Robert E. Lee Academy during the years her boys were here. She even took the golf team to four state championships. "I knew that my boys enjoyed school and received a good education, but I never truly realized how blessed we are in Lee County to have a school as wonderful as REL. The last four years have been the best of my teaching career and I am so grateful for the opportunity to continue to teach here." |
