Athletic Philosophy Statement

Athletics is important to the entire educational process. We will strive to enhance emotional, mental, social and physical well-being. The learned skills of fair play, cooperation, ability to handle stress, desire and determination will be emphasized at all levels.
The athletics philosophy consists of four core beliefs:
1. It's all about the kids;
2. Have fun;
3. Work hard and play hard all the time;
4. The lessons learned from playing on a team will have lifelong benefits.

Girls JV & Varsity Tennis

Tryout Information

Rising 6th – 12th Graders

If you are interested in trying out for the JV or Varsity Tennis team, we will have scheduled practice/try-outs from 6:30 – 8:00 pm, 2 days a week, at the Bishopville Public Courts starting the week of May 26th. The practices will cover the fundamentals of tennis and give you additional practice. Attendance to the practices will have no bearing on your placement on the team but will certainly prepare you for the “Ranking Matches” required during tryouts.

We need approximately 8-10 players for JV and 8-10 players for Varsity. The “Ranking Matches” are one-on-one matches played against each other to determine the ranking of your skills. Those ranked in the top will be selected for the team. During the season, those ranked #1 - #6 in singles will represent the school in the singles matches and those ranked #1 - #3 doubles will play the 3 doubles matches. Occasionally, if the other school has additional courts, we will play some additional matches but this is not guaranteed and we never know for sure until we arrive for the match.

You have 6 weeks to get ready for Tryouts. You can take lessons, attend tennis clinics or practice with a friend. Tryouts will begin the week of June 2nd and end June 20th . If selected for the team, you are expected to attend all scheduled practices. Scheduled team practices will be shared with you during tryouts. SCISA only allows practice 2 times a week from June 2nd – July 13th. We’re not allowed to practice from June 30th – July 5 and from July 14th - 30th. Practice will start back on August 4th. Our first match will be around August 20th.

You are required to have a current physical on record with the office before you can participate in clinics.

Our first meeting (parents included) will be Thursday, May 29th, Bishopville Public Courts from 6:30 – 8:00 pm. You must be present for the meeting if you plan to tryout.

Remember to bring your tennis racquet and plenty of water or Gatorade to tryouts and practices.

Please call if you have any questions.

Volleyball Information from Coach Gooding

Volleyball tryouts will be from May 27th-May 29th this year. The only exception for missing tryouts would be if a new student enrolls after tryouts are over!!! A special tryout time would be set up if that situation should occur. The times will be from 10:00 until 11:30 for grades 6-10 and 11:00 to 12:30 for grades 11-12. You must have a current physical on file in order to participate in tryouts. There will summer practice all during the month of June and part of July for the girls who make the teams. While the practices are not mandatory, they will only help our teams get better. I am only offering 2 camps this summer. The first one is at Francis Marion University. The dates are June 23rd – June 26th. The price is $175.00 if you commute and $275.00 if you stay on campus. Most of the girls stayed on campus last year. The second camp is August 4th and 5th and is mandatory for all team members. The cost will be around $60.00.

I will have a summer practice schedule available as soon as I can verify gym availability dates. I can tell you that the practices are normally 2 days per week for 1 hour and 30 minutes. We will probably participate in a summer league at Sumter High and we will have some scrimmages.

Spring practice will begin on Monday, April 14th. These practices will be for any girl in grades 5-11 who would like to try out for volleyball. These are not mandatory and participation in these practices does not guarantee you a spot on the team. The dates for spring practices are : April 14th, April 15th, April 21st, April 22nd, and April 23rd. The times will be 2:30 until 4:00. You will not need a physical to participate in these practices. You will need a pair of kneepads and some cool clothing. Please no spaghetti strap tops. You will not be allowed to miss practice from another sport that you are already participating in at REL. I am allowed to have a few more spring practices according to SCISA rules but I do not have those dates available at this time.

Volleyball is a great sport and I expect anyone who wishes to play volleyball at REL to come out with a great and positive attitude. I absolutely love the sport and love coaching it!!!!!!! I expect 100 percent participation and dedication. I am looking forward to a wonderful season!!
