Mrs. Odom's and Mrs. Bramlett's K5 Butterfly Experience
Mrs. Kim and Mrs. Eva’s five-year-old kindergarten class released 32 butterflies into the REL biology class butterfly garden! The class raised caterpillars and observed the life cycle of the butterfly. The caterpillars were tiny in the beginning. After 5- 10 days of feeding, the caterpillars had grown into large caterpillars. Then, the caterpillars climbed to the top of their containers and attached themselves to a tissue. The caterpillars then formed a chrysalis that hung from the tissue. The class removed the tissues with the chrysalis attached and attached them to a mesh cage where they could watch the butterflies emerge. After the butterflies emerged, the class fed them with a sugar/water mixture until they were ready to be released. The class, also, made a craft to represent each stage of the life cycle of the butterfly and displayed their creations in the hallway outside their classroom. This was a great, “hands-on” experience for the class! |
